Archibald Alison was born in Edinburgh but was educated at Balliol and ordained in the Church of England. He returned to Edinburgh in 1800 as an Anglican clergyman and served there until his death. His published works included collections of sermons, but he is best known for his Essays on the Nature and Principles of Taste.

He met Burns in Edinburgh during February 1789. The following year Alison published Essays on the Nature and Principles of Taste, a copy of which he sent to the poet. After some delay in acknowledging the book, Burns wrote Alison an enthusiastic letter from Ellisland dated 14th February 1791.
